MoM Hips Fail Faster Than Expected, Report Says
Nov0
In most cases, hip replacement can last for about 15-20 years.Through the years it will start to wear off and patient may need a hip revision surgery. However, current reports show a faster than normal failure rate of the metal hip devices. Nearly 1/3 of ASR hip replacements fail in six years, as reported by the National Joint Registry for England and Wales (NJR). DePuy ASR hip is a product of DePuy Orthopedics, a subsidiary company of Johnson & Johnsons Inc.
On the 3rd month of 2011, the annual meeting of the British Hip Society was conducted. Several doctors and patients discussed about MoM hip implants’ failure rates, particularly the DePuy ASR. The results of the failure rate were 21% at 4 years and 49% at 6 years, higher than what was expected. Pain in this group of patients should be taken seriously and investigated appropriately” especially with the results presented. When a hip implant starts to fail, pain can be one of the earliest complaints.
There is a heightened concern about all-metal hip in the United States. The Food and Drug Administration, as reviewed by the New York Times, received greater complaints about MoM hip devices this year than the previous four years combined. FDA has taken steps of asking the manufacturers to study the frequency of hip failure and to examine the health of their patients.
About 2,100 recipients of the DePuy ASR are being tracked by the British Joint Registry. Of the patients who received the device 6 years ago, 29% of them had hip re-replacement. The failure rate of patients who received the device half a decade ago is lower at 17%, however this data may increase over the next year.Doctors and patients of the United States pay close attention to the registry’s findings even if they are tracking patients not from the US because no such registry exists in the country.
In response to the report of NJR, DePuy, through their spokesperson stated that the failure rate “should be interpreted with caution because it is based on a small number of cases.”The failure rates presented come off as a great concern and warning for patients who received the device. Before having a hip replacement, patients and surgeons should both consider whether or not to use all-metal hip device. With the various failure rate presented, a DePuy hip recall has been issued and still continues until the present.
A TV Special About Alcoholism Symptoms Results in Some Stressful and Depressing Thoughts About a Young Lady’s Abusive and Excessive Drinking
Oct0
Daniel had been engaging in irresponsible drinking behavior since her senior year in college. Now, seven years later, she drank more than ever. One Saturday evening when she wasn’t feeling all that well, Daniel made up her mind to stay home, loosen up, and watch TV.
While trying to find a special program to watch that would be of interest, she immediately became captivated with a special program about young adult and teenage drinking troubles.
When The Usual Alcoholic Symptoms and Signs are Displayed by Alcohol Addicted Individuals
The narrator talked about the difference between alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse and then discussed the subject of alcoholism symptoms and alcoholism warning signs. When the narrator discussed a person’s alcoholic behavior and some of the more widespread alcohol dependency symptoms and signs that individuals dependent on alcohol exhibit, Daniel got quite disturbed because it virtually seemed as if the spokesperson was talking directly to her.
After watching the TV special, Daniel made a promise to herself that she would call her physician the following morning and make an appointment to discuss her drinking circumstance.
When the next business day arrived, true to her word, Daniel called her doctor and made an appointment. In the meantime, she went on the web and did a search for alcoholic symptoms. Especially noteworthy were the following symptoms or signs: increasing tension, making excuses to drink at virtually every occasion, sneaking extra drinks before social events, substantial work-related and relationship issues, and sleep problems.
Stated simply, since Daniel experienced all of these symptoms she went into greater detail in her online search and found quite a lot of websites and blogs that highlighted various alcoholic symptoms and warning signs.
One of the symptoms that really captured her attention was the following: “Do you commonly drink after promising yourself that you won’t?” While Daniel never totally comprehended the fact that she may have a critical drinking problem, after reading about the different alcohol addiction symptoms and warning signs, she couldn’t counter the fact that for the past seven or eight months, she frequently tried but failed at substantially decreasing her drinking or totally quitting.
When Relatives Bother You by Frowning on Your Excessive Drinking
Another alcoholic sign that took hold of her interest was the following: “Have family members bothered you by frowning upon your drinking?” When Daniel read this she at once recalled a recent fight she had with her uncle about her hazardous drinking behavior. Furthermore, Daniel without a doubt reflected on a recent spat she had with her parents about her hazardous drinking. Due to the fact that Daniel truthfully believed that she didn’t have a drinking problem, when others pointed out her drinking she of course got perturbed and annoyed.
A third alcoholism warning sign was the following: “Do you crave a drink when you first get up in the morning?” Until now, Daniel had been less than honest with herself about her drinking situation. After reading about the aforementioned alcoholism warning symptoms, however, she knew if she was really frank with herself that she was facing a significant drinking problem, especially given the fact that she now felt that she needed a drink the first thing when she got up to cut down on her anxiety.
What is more, the next alcoholism symptom really got her thinking: “Do you drink to steer clear of problems or worries?” When she reflected on her life for a few minutes, she grasped the fact that practically in every challenging situation in the past several months, she told herself that she needed a drink to help manage the discord in her life.
The final alcoholism symptom that made her feel fairly anxious about her drinking problem was the following: “Has your ambition dropped off since you started drinking on a more normal basis?” When Daniel read this sign she plainly recognized that drinking had become a major difficulty in her life because of her lack of energy and also because she quit pursuing her goals and her passions.
Summary: When Getting Morose Turns Into Something Exciting and A Sense of Anticipation
After thinking about all of these injurious alcohol addiction symptoms and signs, Daniel at first felt crestfallen. Then something exhilarating took place. She realized that she was going to see her physician about her drinking problems and she also reflected on the fact that that she would discuss all of the above alcoholism warning signs and symptoms with her. As a matter of fact, for the first time in more than a few months, Daniel frankly felt a sense of hopefulness because she was dealing with her drinking problems and was at long last ready to make the needed adjustments so that she could restore the life that was drifting away.
Full Figured Fashion Week in New York
Aug0
Recently our team at SWAK Designs had an opportunity to take part in an amazing historical event. Our owner Brad Capo sent Rhasaan Perry (VP of Sales/Merchandising) and myself to New York City to participate in the first ever Full Figured Fashion Week produced by Gwen DeVoe CEO of DeVoe Signature Events (DSE) on Thursday June 25 until Saturday June 27, 2009. This event showcased the latest in plus size fashion as well as brought the plus size community together in hope to change the way retailers think of plus size consumers and plus size fashion in the industry today. For those of you who keep up with us and read our weekly articles and blog, you know that we had announced this exciting event and its schedule a few weeks ago urging anyone who is into plus size fashion and the latest trends to attend. So, hopefully you did not miss out on the festivities and were able to attend. If not, you are in luck because I have the details of how it all went down.
The FFFWeek events started on Thursday June 25th with an amazing shopping soiree at Re/Dress boutique in Brooklyn. This event was to welcome all of the out of town guests while they enjoyed premium shopping. Together with Pockets and Purses with a Purposes Tracey V. Bell (Chairman and President, PPWAP) and Kim Coles (Global Spokesperson, PPWAP) customers shopped vintage plus size clothing and were given the opportunity to donate their lightly used purses and wallets for the foundation which later will be bundled with personal care products and counseling services for women/children in Domestic Violence Shelters.
Later that evening they had a designers showcase and networking event with a plus size fashion show which took place at Club Blvd. The fashion show featured fabulous new designs by Ashley Stewart and en.v. new york by Designer Just Raymona. Unfortunately, due to our work schedule here at SWAK Designs our team had to miss out on Thursday’s events but by all the pictures out there, the event looks to have been a success for all involved.
The following day we spent the morning fitting some of our beautiful plus size models that were going to be wearing our fashions in the finale runway show. After that we made our debut at the FFFWeek Buyers Market. This sales event was put together to help connect the attending plus size fashion buyers and boutique owners with participating FFFWeek designers and suppliers. This was a great business networking opportunity for us as an on-line retailer and wholesaler. It helped open some new doors and create some great opportunities for us as well as meet some amazing buyers and boutique owners in the plus size industry.
During this time the “The State of the Curvy Community” panel discussion began at another location with moderator Sharon Quinn. This panel discussion addressed the current state of the plus size community and the significance of Full Figured Fashion Week, through the eyes of some of the industry’s leaders, bringing different perspectives from various experiences and points of views from all attendees. Since we were participating in the Buyers Market at that time we were unable to attend the panel discussion, but from what I heard it was an extremely powerful, positive, and uplifting discussion.
Later that night we attended the Media Reception/Press Party at the Taj Lounge which was a blast. It was great to meet and network with such a variety of professionals from media, designers, and models. The night went on at the Sage Theatre without us at the Full Figured Friday mini-concert hosted by Queen Aishah who is a comedian, actress, radio personality, and philanthropist. The venue had performances by Queen Aishah, Crystal P. (Detroit’s new Queen of Comedy) and The Glamazons, the fierce foursome plus size pop group whose mission is to show the world that talent comes in all sizes. After the Media Reception was the FFFWeek Friday Night Dance Party at the Stitch Lounge. This was an opportunity for all attendees to dance, mingle, eat, and celebrate FFFWeek and all of the events.
Saturday the final day was also filled with exciting events from morning to night. They began the day with a Small Business Workshop which taught attendees how to market their business or organization online using social networking. After that was the Curves in the City Shopping Soiree which was open to the public and had discount shopping with participating FFFWeek designers and vendors. Unfortunately, Rhasaan and I were unable to attend either event as we were doing final fittings with our models and preparing our collections for the finale runway show.
Then finally that evening was what we all had been anticipating…..the Finale Runway Showcase at The Prince George Ballroom. It was a semi-formal, finale designer showcase featuring the collections from Agape Goddess Wear, Ashley Stewart, Big Girls United (BGU), Candi Apple Couture, Jewel Shannon Designs, LaMaica Fashions, Monif C., Osun Design, Qristyl Frazier Designs, Robert E. Knight, and yours truly Sealed With a Kiss Designs. The show was incredible and the designs were amazing. It was really hard to choose but I would have to say that the designs by BGU and Qristyl Frazier were my absolute favorites in the show besides our collection of course. When it was time for our designs to hit the runway we were dressing and fixing our models as fast as we could to get them perfect before they stepped out on the runway. It was so interesting to be on the other side of a runway show this time around, not participating as a model but as a representative of a clothing line. I was feeling such a different type of nervousness that I’ve never felt before. Although Rhasaan and I were battling our nerves, all of our models were somewhat calm and really rocked it out for us. Our designs were a hit as well as our models who were looking beautiful and we received so many great compliments from people at the show. What a rush! After all of the designs were shown it was pictures and networking time and as a plus size model, this is my favorite thing to do. Later there was an after party where attendees were able to dance, mingle, and eat while celebrating such an amazing show. Needless-to-say it was a late night with an early flight the next morning, but so worth it.
FFFWeek was an definite success for us as a whole. We hope that next year Gwen DeVoe with DeVoe Signature Events (DSE) will bring this ground breaking event to us here in Los Angeles. We feel so blessed to have been part of such an amazing, ground breaking event for the plus size fashion industry. We are so thankful to have had the opportunity to share our designs with such a welcoming, enthusiastic, supportive audience. For those of you that Rhasaan and I crossed paths with on this adventure it was such a pleasure to meet you all and hope you will stay in touch. If you have any comments or feedback please feel free to do so below. We would love to hear from you.
