Australia can be magic, you’ve saved money and planned your trip, but what do you do if your ride breaks down or you mistakenly wander off from the group in the bush? Note that it is always advisible that you have at minimal a small amount of experiance in survival medicine before leaving on any wild pursuit. Going through the top survival guides can be a chore so we’ve searched them for the best facts for your perusal. Whose been there, done it and used the T-shirt to store water? Our experts. Here’s a list of the top ten bush survival tips and techniques!

1. Be Ready for Anything
In arid environments, you have to expect the unexpected before you even depart. You might enrol on a beginners’ survival course before your trip, a good idea according to thesurvivalexpert.

2. Packing
Preparing for survival is having the best tools with you. A good knife, a small mirror, a compass, matches and flint, rubbers, a first aid kit, a water bottle and filter. Some knives have hollow handles which contain many of these essentials though the knife itself will be less durable according to John Wiseman, author of the SAS Survival Guide.

3. Go Lightly
Should you have to move, you will be quicker, the lighter you travel. When it comes to choosing what you take with you and discard, you should make informed selections. You’ll waste critical time and energy going back for any items you need but left behind.

4. Avoid Anxiety
You should see this as a key part of your survival. Provided you have adhered to the other three steps, you should be in a position to remain cool or at least more collected than others who may be stranded with you.

5. Water
We can survive for three weeks without food but only for three days without water as The SAS Survival Guide explains. This is why you took your canteen bottle and condoms. Keeping movement to a minimum is important if you haven’t got any liquids but you should find shade and look for water as the sun is going down. Don’t take breath through your mouth, don’t smoke or drink alcohol as these all use up vital fluids.

6. Eating
If you select to go by foot, you’ll need protein and this can best be found in meat. It would be a neat idea to have prior knowledge of the local animal and plant life. In the bush, swallowing insects and cutting leftover meat from wild carcasses is important and you’ll probably find yourself doing so. According to survivalist Bear Grylls, however, you should make sure meat is edible by looking at the color of the bones and whether or not there are any vultures nearby. Keep moving if the bones have been bleached by the sun or the meat smells rancid. If it’s edible, have it as it is as there’ll be more protein in it.

7. Fire
If you can access them, use matches or flint and a striker to make a fire to keep you warm after sunset. Try using Old Man’s Beard or a similar dry plant for tinder. You can also use fire to make signals, cook or sterilise liquids. If you can’t find flint, you’ll have to make fire with sticks, see Ray Mears on YouTube to find out how.

8. Shelter
Finding shade is important, most importantly from the midday sun. You should try to make some shelter using plants and whatever fabric you can muster if the environment doesn’t provide any natural places. Covering yourself from the elements is important and it can even aid your mood.

9. Signals
For this reason, you have a mirror. Reflecting the sun in the right direction can let you to signal for help, keeping you alive. You can create a lot of smoke to make signals by covering your flame in live or ‘wet’ branches.

10. Moving
Keeping the camp running is important if you’re staying and you’ll have to be sure of you’re water supply. If you’re going, you’ll have  to have water, stay out of the sun as much as possible and be sure of you’re direction. For this reason, you brought your compass! Being confident can keep you alive and can help you avoid panic.
