Gift Registries Are More Than Glorified Wish Lists
Apr0
Shopping off of a registry can really open your eyes as to the values and hopes of a close friend. You get the registry from guest services and give it good once over glance. You go back to guest services to see if a mistake has been made, it has not. As you see the items on the registry it does not seem like your friend at all.
As you flip through the pages and start locating one item after another, you learn more and more about your friend, this expecting mommy. You start to learn more about their values and tastes. You can begin to find out what sort of life they are expecting to have with their baby, and how their life will change.
This is a woman who does not style her hair. She will not wear skirts or dresses. She does not own perfume. At the top of her list you see ladybug baby bedding. How well did you know her? Are you sure this is the right registry? You check again and continue.
Do you really know her? She complains about the mark up price in stores. She would never pay full price for anything. She is the queen of thrift store shopping. There is designer baby bedding on her list though. It does not seem as though this all adds up with the image you have of your dear friend.
She rarely thinks as far ahead as dinner. Planning for the future something that she has always seemed almost morally opposed to. You find convertible baby furniture is on her registry and you do not know what to make of it. The image you have of her is forever changed by a simple shopping trip.
A gift registry helps you to receive gifts that you will enjoy and use. It also helps to avoid duplicate gifts. It is times like these when you realize that registries do more, they convey values, hopes, aspirations, lifestyle, and much more. It is a reflection of that person, whether they know it or not. All those text messages have nothing on this.
Becoming a mother changes everything. You may have to spend some time getting to know her all over again. She will be full of surprises. Thanks to her registry you have a head start on getting to know the person she is becoming. And you thought registries were glorified wish lists!
